Education is all about learning new things and enhancing capabilities. But the conventional form of the education system is quite boring. Now, everyone is more concerned about learning with fun that’s why engaging content and processes are more desirable. Gamification is satisfying this requirement and is thus highly acceptable in the education industry. Let’s see how gamification is redefining the education system and how learning has become more fun and effective.

Gamification: What Does It Mean?

Gamification simply describes the use of game elements, design, and mechanics in other non-game activities. As per Yu-Kai Cou, a gamification expert, and author of Actionable Gamification, “Gamification is the craft of deriving all the fun and addictive elements found in games and applying them to the real-world or productive activities.

The method can be stockers, badges, direct competitions, or leaderboards and utilized by various industries such as retail and healthcare apart from education which is being revolutionized with gamification.

Transform A Boring Lecture Into Engaging Session…..But How?

Games render entertainment and thus if you gamify the education system it will transform a boring lecture into an entertaining education class. Nothing is more important than education and every student needs motivation for learning. Gamification is a way that makes education more entertaining and engaging.

Could Gamification In Education Bring Any Revolution?

Gamification in education for kids and children was so common but nowadays everyone needs motivation and entertainment. A Harvard Graduate School of Education study in 2010 revealed that almost 1.2 million students fail in their graduation each year. Only 56% of the students complete their 4-years graduation in 6 years. It was felt that the entire education system and process needed to be changed and should be made more innovative and engaging.

Let’s see how it is useful for higher education as well:

  1. Self-paced online learning could be more engaging. Learners will not be only motivated to learn but will understand each concept more clearly.
  2. Devices such as smartphones are being carried by the students even in the classrooms. Gamification motivates them to use their own devices in the classroom to learn their lesson easily with more fun.
  3. College students are highly interested in playing games. This interest can be used to harness the competition among the students through gamification. They would be excited to complete a task and to compete with their fellow mates.
  4. Some of the games are based on strategizing concept and thus helps in boosting the thinking capabilities and skills of the students.
  5. In gamification, students can be grouped for a certain task. It would help students to learn and do a task in a collaboration that helps them a lot in online learning.

How Education Can Be Gamified?

There are various ways to employ gamification in the education industry. Let’s see how the conventional classroom can be introduced to the gamification.

  • Find out the pain points

Find out the pain points of the classroom, it will help you in creating a strategy for gamification. You can put the issues of the students at the forefront of your strategy. For instance, if you find that your students are getting bored with the PowerPoint presentation; you could add some interactive elements to make it interesting and engaging.

You can also survey to know your audience, their requirement, pain point, etc. As per the Survey, you can gamify the education system to make them more effective.

  • Define a goal

Defining a goal will be easier to find how you should introduce gamification in education. Whether you want to engage the students or you want to explain a difficult or boring concept to the students with much interaction. It becomes easier with gamification.

  • Redefine the grading system

Most of the parents and students find marks as the most nerve-wracking part of the learning. So the grading system should be strategized based on the fact that it would present the progress of a student rather than mistakes.

  • Organize the resources and elements

Every game has a set of instructions that deliver the steps and the required information about the game to the gamer. Likewise, you must create a manual in which you have explained everything, step by step. It will include what is your strategy, the end goal, how a student will accumulate the points, and the winning strategy.

  • Apply the elements in the system

Employing the strategy is not enough; you must measure the progress as well. You must create, maintain, and share a chart that will show the progress of every student.

Apart from progress, students also want some reward points and that’s why you must take care of these elements.

Gamification in Education Is All About the End Result

The success of gamification is based on the flow of activity. It doesn’t matter what is the content, what attracts gamers is the flow that engages them and forces them to complete the task. There are so many apps as well as software available for gamification of the education industry. Such games including quizzes and challenges are widely used to engage and educate a student. The gamification brings comfort and a familiar zone for students.

But it should also be noted that the gamification shouldn’t be followed just because it is in trend and people are getting bored with the learning process. All activities need to be strategized and set up with an end goal. Also, it should accomplish the requirement of the students.

We are consistently talking about the cutting edge technology that includes Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, etc.

How are these technologies transforming the world and bringing hope for the future?

Apart from these, we are also seeking for other supportive technologies that will be more transformative.

In this context, SLAM which stands for Simultaneous Localization and mapping, can make it possible for further innovation with augmented reality and virtual reality.

Some other areas include graphics, connectivity, haptic, audio, display, and artificial intelligence, where SLAM could introduce a significant innovation.

Let’s see What SLAM is and how it would be transformative.

What SLAM Refers To?

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technology helps to understand and create a map by collecting different data and then converting them in various forms so that it can interpret easily.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simultaneous_localization_and_mapping

Before SLAM, the indoor machines collected the data, which had problems reading its surrounding using a map. Locally, these terms were castoff as egg and chicken problem.

SLAM has interpreted this egg and chicken problem by collecting the data and receiving the Ariel signals from the environment through the map using specific points.

AR in SLAM would illustrate the map as a 3D object and scenes and instantly track the world.

SLAM Focuses On Robotics, Ariel View, Unmanned Vehicles & Vision For Computers

As we know, SLAM is used in commercial, household, industrialized, and logistics departments. It also plays a vital role in the military department because it is used in our daily life as it focuses on Robots, Unmanned Vehicle, Computer Vision, and Ariel View (Maps).

It uses the mechanism of Apple and Google. Apple Inc. has taken over an Augment Reality platform named Metaio. Using AR as their platform, Apple Inc. had launched ARkit for iOS mobile devices, and these high build ARkit were user-friendly for iPhones and ipads.

The camera used in AR id determines light sources by which AR objects are lit. These ARkit removed the entire traditionally used marker-based platform from the market.

In the marker-based platform, one had to define the image to point the camera to see the AR experience, which decreased AR’s performance. Due to these limitations, Marker-based was replaced by ARkit.

Unmanned Vehicles are also seeing a larger scope of SLAM. Alphabet Inc. used SLAM for self-driving and research under its own subsidiary Wamyo, which started out as a program for the autonomous vehicle.

SLAM has also been used in technology on Robotics and UAVs. Several projects have been launched using this technology in many of the products.

In 2017, a system named SLAM dunk was launched. It could be attached to any UAV to provide a different kind of operation features by a company called “Parrot,” which even launched a French drone.

Now, as we know the benefits of SLAM, the SLAM is being increasingly used in the field of Robotics, Ariel View, Unmanned Vehicles, and Computer Vision. The market for AR technology is projected to grow double and triple.

slam

Future Aspect

SLAM will be mainly focused on the mobile device; however, it is more than this. It will be transcended to cars, robots, laptops, VR headsets, and more as all these devices have different inputs, so the future will have different SLAM solution for all.

Also, it could play a pivotal role for businesses and consumers, such as navigation, gaming, advertising, etc.

In the meantime, if you are working on an exciting SLAM project and need to discuss with an expert, you can drop an email at enquiry@queppelintech.com.

Have you ever experienced Virtual reality or played any VR game that is found generally in shopping malls? If no, then we highly recommend you not to miss the VR experience that places a user in a digital world making them that they are actually there. Sounding complex? In simple words, what if, you are sitting in a room taking the experience of Switzerland just by wearing the VR headsets? Amazing…Isn’t it? Our blogs on Virtual reality including, VR in healthcare, real estate, VR for workforce training give enough knowledge about this revolutionary technology. Do check our blogs to better understand the Augmented and Virtual realities.

Virtual reality can be defined as the use of computer technology for creating a simulated environment in which the user interacts with the 3 D world. From the world of colored photographs and moving images VR takes its users to a virtual world depicted in the pictures. Virtual reality is one of the technologies that are continuously improving since its evolution. Better graphic cards, high-performance displays, and computer hardware are making this technology more powerful and cost-effective day by day.

Eye-tracking in Virtual Reality

This blog focuses on another big advancement of eye-tracking in virtual reality. Eye-tracking can be defined as the sensor technology that makes it possible for a device or a computer to track the position of a user’s eyes. So what an eye tracker can do? The eye tracker detects the presence, focus, and attention of the users. Don’t you think that when a technology like eye-tracking and VR combine they will create experiences that are most natural and immersive?

Indeed the combination will result in making users feel that they have gained superpowers. The experience of eye tracking in VR will be unique as interactions will be more fluid and exciting. Now imagine a scenario of using VR headsets with no eye-tracking technology. You need to first look, turn your head or point with a hand controller for selecting. With eye-tracking technology in VR headsets, all the steps above are eliminated and the user just needs to look and select. The experience with eye-tracking in VR is direct and seamless.

VR in eye tracking can be related to touch implementation in mobile phones. In both, cases sensors are integrated to adapt to natural human biology to make interactions precise, real and direct.

Benefits of eye tracking in VR

Benefits for marketers

Aren’t you excited about knowing, how eye tracking in VR can be used in the business world? We’ll let you know how this technology creates ripples across industries.

Eye-tracking in VR is of great help for the marketers as they can understand the unconsciousness, attention, and interest of customers. VR headsets with eye-tracking technology offer detailed insights about factors that trigger the buying decisions of customers.  This is because eye tracking in VR allows marketers to gather data about where the customers look first and where they gaze longest.

VR Eye Tracking

Accenture using the power of eye-tracking in VR

Accenture teamed with Qualcomm and Kellogg’s to transform how brands collect the consumer data and perform the research. Accenture’s Extended Reality (XR) practice designed an immersive VR experience for testing the assortment, pricing strategy and planogram of Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts Bites. The eye-tracking technology helped Kellogg to determine the correlations that have an impact on the consideration and purchase of customers. The VR solution designed by Accenture for Kellogg allowed it together with the behavioral data that cannot be obtained through traditional merchandising methods.

Smita & Sanjay were sitting on their balcony quietly sipping the tea on the eve of Diwali. Smita was continuously looking at the family in front of their house, bursting crackers, lighting up the diyas and taking the family pictures.

The sense of being apart from their children on Diwali eve was reflecting on their faces. The couple has a son, living abroad with family. The couple said, “a festival without our kids is not a festival; it is just a normal day.” We will have our dinner and go to sleep. Anxiously, I asked, “Aunty why don’t you give a video call to your son and connect for the celebration?” A mere video call is not enough to bring us closer with our kids, she said.

vr emotional

Augmented reality and Virtual reality applications as enterprise solutions have already marked their presence across the industries including healthcare, real estate, farming, interior designing, etc. There is yet a huge scope around these technologies. The enhanced reality with AR and VR in the future will have a positive impact on the emotions of people as well.

Let’s find out how?

Do you have an idea that how many people leave India and settle abroad every year?

According to the India Spend Analysis, over 17 million Indians left abroad in 2017.  The movement of millions of families from India to other countries is leading to an issue of Silo’ed society. The relationships in such a situation are being significantly affected. The social media conversations and video calls do bridge a little difference between the families. But are these technologies enough to eliminate ‘isolations’ within families’ living apart?

status in vr

The Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality has already made huge differences in the processes across the industries. By 2030, these technologies will redefine how relationships are cherished. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality cannot fulfill the physical presence of the family members living apart but can give a feeling of their presence as real as possible.

Celebrating festivals in 2030 with immersive technologies

Same like Smita & Sanjay there are millions of couples that celebrate the festivals and occasions alone thinking of their children who are living apart. AR and VR are disruptive technologies that have the potential to bring families closer to the digital world.

Imagine two families, one living in San Diego, California and one in Mumbai, India. The families will celebrate their festivals and occasions in a virtual world. The family members will interact with others and experience the festivals as if they are present in the same room. The new integrated technology platform will take the immersive experience to the next level. The next level of experience will allow the families living apart design their seating arrangement for a same-room interaction experience. The families using these technologies will celebrate rituals, cut the cake and have the meals together and burst crackers together!

vr in social emotional

Is it hard to imagine a virtual world described above? Maybe, but someone who knows the potential of these technologies can imagine the above scenario easily. AR and VR are the new horizons of the human experience. The opportunities with AR and VR are only getting bigger passing years. In 2016, it was already depicted by Deloitte that the immersive technology market will as high as $1bn (£710m). Goldman Sachs also forecasted that by the year 2025 this market could be worth $80bn (£56.8bn).

emotional virtual reality

Movies, books, articles, and reports have already made several bold predictions about these technologies. These technologies are making accelerated progress right in front of our eyes. The investments in XR technologies are improving the speed and quality of training, reducing the cost of business processes along with improving the efficiency to the next level.

What will be the difference in AR and VR experience by the year 2030?

A truly immersive experience by the year 2030 will rely on three important pillars that will simulate the human senses.

  • The visuals in future immersive technologies will be highly vibrant differentiating it from the real world.
  • The sounds will be as accurate and real as if the participants are sitting right in front of you and parallel to real life.
  • The interactions between the two parties will make the participants forget that there is an interface between them.

With the advancements in immersive technologies, I truly believe that festivals and occasions need not be celebrated away from the families by 2030. The next generation of technologies soon will bridge the distances and give an experience of real-life situations. Families would be sitting next to each other having a conversation and celebrating the big and small occasions together.  The 5 G network speed will ensure that there are no interruptions and live body language and head movements will be accurate.

5g

Major Breakthroughs in Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

Several advancements are yet to be made in the area of immersive technologies. These advancements will improve the virtual human experience to the next level. Some of them are listed below:

Mirror world in virtual Reality

The term Mirror World was popularized by David Gelernter, a computer scientist.  These are the alternative dimensions of the reality that cover the physical space. With the Mirror worlds in AR and VR, one will find a calm lake in office and pencils as the magic wands in classrooms!

Ultra-fast 8G and 10 G networks

The 5G network is improving human communication significantly but still, several communication aspects are missing. The future 8G and 10G AR and VR devices will be capable of giving insights to even the emotions and desires of the users!

The idea of using the immersive AR and Virtual Reality technologies for bridging the differences between the families living apart seems to be strong. The advancements in these technologies will ensure that none of the special and memorable occasions are missed by the families living away from their homes.

With AR and VR the geographical differences between families will not only reduce but may fade away completely!

It would be really exciting to see how these technologies will slowly but steadily enrich our lives even at a personal level.

What is Virtual Reality (VR)?

One of the most common examples that quickly help someone in relating to Virtual reality is the VR games.  The VR games are often being seen played by people of different ages in the shopping malls. Whether it is a 10-ye-old child or a 50-year-old man VR games transport the players in another world! Players shout, laugh and act as if they are shooting the zombies or driving a racing car! It’s fun watching these VR game players.

guide to virtual reality

Virtual reality is an alluring experience where an individual is not just an observer but a participant in the story. A user after putting the VR headsets is transported to a new world thinking that how is this so real? Sounding cool? It is cool more than someone can imagine. Do you think that games are the only offsprings of this revolutionary technology? The answer is, no. This blog will make you familiar with the fundamentals of VR, the evolution of VR, the real-world application of VR and the future of VR.

Wikipedia defines VR as a simulated experience that can be completely different or similar to that of real-world environment. Some of the common applications of VR technology are found in video games, education, training, etc.

Cambridge Dictionary defined VR as a set of sounds and images that are computer-generated and seem to present a situation or a place in which a person can participate.

VR in simple words can be defined as the use of computer technology for creating a simulated environment that places a user in an entirely new experience. There are several other definitions of VR but the essence remains the same. VR is a revolutionary technology that lets a user experience a world that is not even created!

It allows a user to see the surrounding world in other dimension along with creating an experience that is not accessible in real life or even not yet created.

Characteristics of Virtual reality

There are three major characteristics of immersive VR technology

  • VR is computer-generated; the complex 3D computer graphics that change in real-time makeup the VR world.
  • VR is immersive; the artificial environment generated in VR immerses the user in the artificial environment in such a way that the users feel that they are in the real world.
  • VR is believable; the artificial environment generated with VR makes a user feel that they are both physically and mentally present in the computer-generated environment.
  • VR is interactive; a user in the VR environment can interact with objects present in the environment.

How did Virtual reality evolve?

The virtual reality which seems to be a new concept started way back in the 1930s. Let’s see how this technology evolved throughout the decades.

In 1930s

The overall concept of Virtual reality dates back to the year 1930s. It was the year when the idea of a pair of goggles that takes the wearer to a new fiction world was evolved in the story Pygmalion’s Spectaclesby Stanley G. Weinbaum.

1950

In the 1950s, Sensorama was developed by the cinematographer Morton Heilig. This is one of the earliest known multi-sensory and immersive technologies. Sensoroma was a mechanical device with features including stereo speakers, smell generators, vibrating chair, and a stereoscopic display. Despite several features, the device was not interactive.

1960

In the year 1960, the first VR head-mounted display (HMD) was developed. The purpose of the development of this headset was to view the unpredictable situations of the military. The headset provided a stereoscopic 3D wide vision along with a stereo sound.

1965

Ivan Sutherland, “Father of Computer Graphics” developed an HMD system that was a way ahead of its time. The system was able to simulate reality to an extent where it was difficult to determine the difference between the virtual and real worlds.

In 1965, Ivan Sutherland developed the Ultimate Display, an HMD system that could simulate reality to the point where one could not tell the difference between the real and virtual world.

1974

Videoplace a camera developed by Myron Krueger was developed in the year 1974. The video camera also included a projection system that produced shadows on the screen. The video camera allowed users to be present in an interactive environment.

1989

The project VIEW (Virtual Interface Environment Workstation) was developed by NASA.  VIEW was a head-mounted display system that displayed a computer-generated environment. An operator can “step into” this environment and interact with it. The operator using VIEW wore gloves with fiber optic cables and sensors. The computer-generated image moved exactly in the way in which the gloved hands moved.

2007

Google Street view has made our lives easier. A user can stand in any part of the world and can look around for finding and exploring the new locations.  Google Street View was launched back in the year 2007. This Google product utilized a regular dodecahedron camera that captured 360- degree high-resolution video from all the directions.

2010

This was the year when the first prototype of Oculus Rift was built by Palmer Luckey.  The virtual reality headset used in the prototype was capable only of the rotational tracking.

2014

Facebook bought the Oculus Company this year and the VR products such as Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR and PSVR were also launched this year. VR became a topic of interest by this year.

2018 – Rise of VR devices

The year 2018 marked a rise of standalone VR devices with a release of several VR systems. The evolution VR 2.0 marked a rise in VR technologies like Steam and Valve. The standalone VR was no more operated on computers and phones.

2019 – The Rise of Mixed Reality (MR)

The year 2019 marked a rise in mixed reality systems along with sophisticated technologies in the VR headsets. The year turned out to be strong for VR with a base of Oculus Quest, a standalone headset of  Facebook. Oculus Quest created a lot of momentum and interest in 2019.

The evolution of virtual reality is wonderful. From the earliest ideas of Morton Heilig in 1950s, Sensoroma simulators in 1960 to the Oculus Quest in 2019 VR have been evolving and improving continuously.  The businesses will continue to leverage the power of this revolutionary technology for their product and services advancement

Real-world applications of Virtual Reality

VR since its birth has attracted interest and attention of individuals and organizations. VR is beyond gaming, it extends to business solutions that significantly improve the customer experience and engagement along with making business processes efficient.

VR offers a powerful, easy and intuitive ways of human interaction that offer numerous benefits in different areas.

A realistic simulated environment without a complex interface is fostering VR application in several industries. It was the VR wonder that led to the evolution of flight simulators that recreate the environment in which an aircraft flies.

VR in military

Ever thought how the military personnel is trained and educated? What if an artificial yet safe environment is generated where the personnel can get an opportunity to experience life-threatening and dangerous environment for their training?  VR is doing wonders in the area of training in the military by simulating the environment in which there is no risk of injury or death. Using VR in military training the personnel are given combat training, battlefield training, boot camp, and vehicle training. In addition, VR in the military is also used for physical training, survival skills training and weapons drill training.

The United States (US) army is using VR to train its soldiers to navigate the real cities. The VR in US military training is keeping the soldiers on their toe. The US Army has also created a “Synthetic training environment” that allows the soldiers to combat and practice 100s of scenarios before setting their foot on the real battle zone.  The STE driven by virtual reality transports the soldiers to a new terrain or country just by strapping a pair of VR glasses. Thanks to revolutionary VR that prepares our soldiers to fight the challenging and dangerous situations in a cost-effective and safe manner.

VR in healthcare

VR apart from changing the face of gaming is also revolutionizing the healthcare sector. VR is healthcare that is transforming the surgical processes along with treating mental health disorders like Autism and memory loss.

VR headsets in surgical processes are used for mimicking the real surgery processes helping the surgeons improving the operating room preparedness and efficiency. VR platforms in surgical processes store the patient data and images and display the same in the most interactive manner during a surgery process. Imagine how the 3D models of body organs right in front of the surgeons would help them in conducting complex surgeries.

VR Heart Surgery

VR assisting the heart surgeries

The surgeons at Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital use VR to plan their surgeries and understand the anatomy of the child patients before making a single cut.

Medical professionals at Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital have been using True 3D to plan heart surgeries, allowing them to understand a patient’s anatomy before making a single incision. A study conducted indicates that participants trained through VR completed the surgery process 20% faster with 38% correct steps given in the procedure-specific checklist.

VR in education

VR in education is making it a real fun like never before. The VR is being used by Colleges to take students on a virtual tour, for example, the solar plants and the museums. VR in education delivers an experiential form of learning. Experiential learning is learning by doing.  Students can retain the knowledge obtained through the VR platform for longer.

VR making complex concepts easier

CEO of Miami’s Children Health System states that the retention rate of VR training is up to 80 % even after a year of training in comparison to just 20% with the traditional training methods. The VR visual formats are the solution to the knowledge retention problem of millions of students.

Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA) at NC State University have utilized VR for making the complex Biology concepts easier and interesting. Using VR University is immersing field-based experiences. The University of British Columbia also experiments with the Virtual lecture halls

VR in sports

The game is not over yet! VR is making the life of athletes easier.  The VR headsets allow the sportspersons to practice anytime and anywhere in the same manner as if they are practicing in the real fields. The phenomenon of using VR in sports is not new.

VR in Sports

Eon sports uses VR app for training

EON Sports is one of a leading virtual reality sports training application developers. Several college and professional sports teams use EON’s products for training their persons. Some of the widely known clients of the company include the New England Patriots, the Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers etc.

VR in real estate

Buying or selling a property is a cumbersome task. The real-estate agent provides a long list of properties and then after some negotiations and explanations, the customers finally take a real-life visit to the apartment or the property. The process is indeed time consuming and inconvenient. VR in real estate is changing the face of the sector. VR headsets let the customers see the properties without actually visiting there!

VR in real allows the buyers to make a virtual interactive visit to properties where they can move across the property just by clicking on the view field. A customer using VR can even see a space with furniture. A user gets a complete view of the new property.

This is also known as the process of virtual staging. According to the report of Profile of Home Staging, 77% of agents believe that buyers often associate a staged property with their future homes. Zillow’s, for example, is a 3 D real estate tool that allows the users to navigate through the new property by clicking the rooms on the right side of the page.

VR in Retail

Now see how VR is creating ripples in the retail sector. VR in retail is allowing retailers to reach a bigger audience. The users using the VR capabilities get access to their favorite product and brand from the comfort of their home! Shopping with VR is true fun; users try their favorite sunglasses or the sneakers using the VR app. If you think that a picture is worth 1000 words then a VR experience is worth millions.   The VR experience in the retail industry lets the retailers demo complex products to customers across the world without worrying about the language differences.

It would be getting difficult to imagine how a user can take a virtual tour of a store and shop the products interactively. Let’s have a look at one of the examples.

Alibaba uses the VR capabilities

Alibaba, a Chinese multinational conglomerate holding company that specializes in in e-commerce, retail, Internet, and technology.

The company introduces a VR shopping experience back in 2017. The shoppers were walking through the stores to buy the products and taking an all-angle view of the products.  In addition to Alibaba, Addidas, Cisco, Ikea, Tesco also dove their customers in VR store experience.

Difference between Augmented Reality (AR) & Virtual Reality (VR)

The differences between Virtual reality and Augmented Reality have been explained in tabular form in our Definitive guide: augmented reality 2020. The same is explained in pictorial form.

“Immersive experiences are impactful, powerful and uncontrollably entertaining”.

Ever heard about the Degree of freedom (DoF)?  Not the one which is the number of values in a final calculation in statistics but something related to Virtual reality.

Sounds a little complex? No worries, this blog gives a basic understanding of the 6 Degree of freedom (DoF) one of the building elements of VR.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Ever saw someone playing the game on PSVR (Play station Virtual Reality Game)? The user is completely immersed in the game; their physical movements are also connected directly to the computer. The immersive VR feeling makes the user feel that they are present in the virtual gaming world! The magic of VR leaves the player stunned.

A high-quality immersive VR experience is possible because of the fact that the user can move within a virtual world.  Positional tracking comes into play in VR at this time.  Positional tracking (6 Dof) in VR lets the user reflect actions including jumping, leaning, or even ducking.  It is an important technology that makes VR a more exciting and immersive experience.

Here is the need to understand the concept of 6 degrees of freedom, a successor of 3 degrees of freedom

DoF is the number of directions an object can move in in a 3 d space. There are a total of 6 degrees of freedom. 3 DoF VR headsets are the ones that track the orientation of a user’s head. In simple words, the headset knows where a user is looking. The three axes in 3DoF include the Roll, Yaw, and pitch.  The 6 Dof, on the other hand, are the headsets that track both the position and orientation.  The 6 DoF, hence knows where the user is looking and where it is in the space.

The orientation and rotation in VR are defined with three values – X (Roll) y (Pitch) and z (Yaw).  When Roll- Pitch -Yaw combine the outcome is 6 DoF.  Three angles together are also known as the Tait-Byan angles.

As discussed above, 6 Dof is the successor of 3 Dof and offers 3 more directions in addition to Roll, pitch, and yawn. The additional three directions include – elevating, strafing, and surging.

The 6 DoF allows a user to move in the VR space rather than just standing at a single spot.

Considering the advancements in the world of Virtual Reality (VR), it is the 6DoF that lets users experience the events in the most realistic form. 6DoF, unlike 3 DoF, lets a user move in all directions making the experience as real as possible. When playing the shoot-em-up first-person game the character does not stand still rather it moves around, looks around, and shoots the zombies on the way! The game becomes fun when the character jumps and moves to avoid becoming the Zombie lunch. Such an exciting game experience was not possible without the 6 DoF.

3 DoF versus 6 DoF

3 DoF6 DoF
3-DoF VR headsets are the ones that track whether a user is looking
– Right or Left
– Rotates their head up or down
– Pivots left or right
3-DoF cannot determine the translational movement (motion from one point to another in a space)
6-DoF headsets are the ones that allow a user to track whether the user is looking
– Forward or backward
– Laterally or vertically
– Up or down
6 DoF headsets give users the freedom to explore and inspect and perform real-life tasks in the virtual world!
The position while using 3 DoF VR headsets is fixed. A user cannot move and interact in thisUsing a 6 DoF VR system users can move around freely in a limited space. Such a type of experience is more realistic and immersive.
– Limited immersion
– 3 DoF headsets are earlier and accessible to make
– The cost of producing 3 DoF headsets is less
– Fast turn around and production
– More Immersive
– Sharper Images
– Interactive
– The cost is higher than the DoF headsets
6 Degree of Freedom vs 3 DoF

What is the need for a 6 DoF?

To improve the immersive experience offered by augmented and virtual realities, it was essential for these technologies to shift from 3DoFto 6 Dof.  The 6 DoF VR sets offer an experience of moving freely and naturally in the virtual environment. It is because of 6 DoF that users get experience as real as possible.  With a 6 DoF VR gaming experience, a user is no longer restricted to tracking space and cameras. No long cables and everything in a 6 DoF world is the same as the real world! It is the 6 DoF that lets the players organize VR events and concerts that make a long-lasting impression on the customers. The freedom of movement.

Accuracy is one of the biggest desires of customers. The quality of the VR experience offered to customers can make or break the perception of these technologies. According to ABI research “by the year 2022, the VR devices with 6 DoF will constitute more than 40% of the VR market!”. An industry analyst indicates that 6 DoF VR devices offer a totally immersive experience that will make a long-lasting impression in the customer’s mind.

World Sense

WorldSense is an exemplary technology that provides positional tracking to Daydream Standalone headsets. The 6 DoF headsets understand the movements of the user in a space without any external sensor. WorldSense is taking VR immersive experience to another level without a complicated setup.

The Virtual and Augmented realities are continuing to draw the audience into an immersive experience like never before! We at Queppelin have designers that have the potential to create unforgettable experiences for audiences worldwide.

I’m PUMPED to announce the all-new Augmented Reality.

Heard about Augmented Reality? If not living under a rock you must have probably used it as well. Ever sent a Snap chat with a filter on it? Snap chat is a classic example of AR.

‘Pokemon Go’ another example that may help you in relating to AR. The Pokemon Go fever gripped millions of people of different ages. People were crazy about capturing their Pokemon using AR in the real world.

This article explores the fundamentals of Augmented Reality Technology in detail.

What is Augmented Reality?

Wikipedia defines Augmented Reality (AR) as an interactive experience of the real-world environment in which objects residing in the real world are enhanced using the perceptual information generated by the computer.
Cambridge Dictionary defines AR as the images that are computer generated and used together with a view of the real world.

Pokemon Go the only game that comes in our mind with Augmented Reality. AR, however, extends beyond the world of gaming. It is now changing how industries and operate and make decisions. The findings of Goldman Sachs indicate that AR and VR technologies will have an $85 billion market by the year 2025. Most of the conversation around Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality revolves around gaming and videos. Large market value is driven by the non-entertainment use of AR technology.

The journey of Augmented Reality started in 1968 by Sutherland. Started with an application in the construction world, AR flourished to another level.

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that offers an interactive experience of a real-world environment. AR enhances the real-world objects by computer-generated perceptual information.

There are three major features of AR :

  1. A blend of a real and virtual world
  2. A real-time interaction
  3. An accurate recording of the real and virtual object

Augmented reality is a revolution that augments reality in a manner that something bigger and better can be achieved”.

The Augmented Reality technology offers a seamlessly interwoven immersive experience with a physical world. The two widely used synonyms of AR are – Computer-mediated reality and Mixed Reality. AR is a user-friendly and comfortable technology that once installed in a particular field requires minimal guidance. By 2017, there were only 336 startups listed on Angelist based on augmented reality. This number will grow as high as 1 Billion by the year 2020!

How did AR evolve?

The evolution of AR can be understood in three clear stages:

Attention stage

  1. The first AR technology was developed in the year 1968 by computer scientist Ivan Sutherland. Sutherland is also known as “Father of Graphics”. Sutherland created the first AR head-mounted display.
  2. Further, one of the first AR application for commercial use was developed in the year.
  3. The purpose of AR application development was the advertisement. The German agencies of Munich used AR for advertisements. The advertisement agencies in Munich created a printed advertisement for BMW Mini. When the car model held in front of the camera, the same appeared on the screen.
  4. The first commercial AR application appeared in 2008. It was developed for advertising purposes by German agencies in Munich. They designed a printed magazine ad of a model BMW Mini, which, when held in front of a computer’s camera, also appeared on the screen. Gradually the AR and VR technology was utilized by giant companies such as Disney, National Geographic and Coca Cola.
  5. AR was utilized for different purposes, such as National Geographic used AR for showing the extinct animals, not in a cage but walking inside a showroom!
  6. Coca Cola used AR for raising the environmental concern of the melting ice. The people till then only heard of the melting ice but AR let them experience the same in a shopping mall. The effect would have multiplied in terms of raising an environmental concern.
  7. Disney used AR for showing the cartoon characters on a large screen making them interact with the people. It would have been a treat to watch!

Trial stage

The second stage of AR evolution started when the digital products were simulated. The simulation lets the products interact with the real world and real-time movements.

Jewelry and watches were the product categories that utilized AR in the 2010s. The use of AR during this stage became popular for the product “try on”.  Apple watch also gave a virtual try on for giving life to its Apple watch.

Usage stage

  1. During this stage of evolution, AR was implemented in a broader range of industries. AR in this stage evolved as one of the valuable tools used for exploring geographic, historical and cultural and environmental aspects.  The app operated when the user points out the mobile device towards a site or an object.
  2. The AR display produced the superimposed content over the screen. During this stage of AR, evolution apps were developed for the tourism industry. The AR was used to take travelers in the past.   For example, the AR app in the Museum of London let the visitors feel and experience the streets that were found 1000 years back.  The paintings in the museum also come to lives using the AR app.
  3. Similarly, apps designed for museum contexts let visitors get more information about famous paintings by overlaying a description over it on smartphone screens in real-time.
  4. From the first computer-generated graphics and projections in the sixties and seventies to the newest AR games and Microsoft HoloLens Developer Kit, the applications and possibilities around AR are constantly evolving. In 2016 total investment in augmented and virtual reality reached €925 Million and shows no signs of slowing down.

How Augmented Reality works?

Excited about knowing how this technology works?   The process of AR starts with computer understanding that what is going around in the user environment. This is done using the content of the camera feed. AR then adds the digital details to the real world. In simple words, this platform adds layers of information on the real-world objects by projecting graphics on the same.

In simple words, AR overlays a projected image or object to layer the real world view of the user. The AR generated display can be seen on devices such as mobile phones, glasses, screens, handheld devices along and head-mounted displays.  Gradually, future advancements may reach a level where AR will be used in the contact lens or even a virtual retinal display.

Augmented Reality works in combination with other technologies including IoT (Internet of things)Yelp, a crowd-sourced review forum, and a leading business directory service are already on its way to use AR. Using AR Yelp is showing the reviews to its customers simply by pointing a restaurant in the camera.

Augmented Reality vs Virtual Reality

“When it comes to travel, age should not be a barrier”

Traveling is a blessing taken for granted at an old age. The older people might have been joyous travelers at their young age but aging affect their interest for travel.

“The wanderlust is never diminishes because of aging but it does affect the way a person travels.

Milli says…“Time flies…there was a time when I and Jane use to travel hard with a dream touching each end of the world. Aging, however, did affect our zeal and power to travel. It is now difficult for us to pack our bags and start our voyage to our dream destination. We are now dependent on our son who has no more time for us.”

There are millions of couples like Milli and Janes who have several travel dreams deep in their hearts but they cannot travel because of their aging issues. Now, what if VR (virtual reality) comes into play?? These technologies are transforming healthcare, education, manufacturing, farming and many other industries.

Can VR be not used for giving memorable travel experiences to seniors in the comfort of their homes? Virtual Reality is one of the weird and ambitious steps that may prove to be a revolutionary travel solution for elderly people.

The idea of Virtual reality rooms for seniors

Imagine …your grandparents laughing, singing and walking together on the beautiful garden at Kenrokuen, Kanazawa, Japan. They are reliving their younger days by immersing in the beauty and fragrance of the roses.  Is it hard to imagine…?  VR (Virtual Reality) rooms do give a strong hope to the idea.  Considering the wonders VR already doing in several industries it would not be wrong to think about the idea of VR rooms for seniors.

So, there may be a question that “VR is already used for virtual travel experiences then what’s new in that?” The idea of a VR room for seniors is different!

Making VR more realistic

Now, imagine your grandparents feeling the snowfall between snow-coated mountain and they are feeling their winds too! This would be an exotic experience for them. The sensation and warmth in VR experience enhance the state of the presence of a user. The study conducted by Hullsman et.al (2014) proposed a CAVE environment for creating sensations like wind and warmth in a VR experience.

According to the National University of Singapore VR should extend beyond sight and sound. The senses should hence come into the play for a better VR experience.

Nimesha Ranasinghe along with his team developed an accessory called “Ambiotherm” that adds a real element of atmosphere to the VR experience of users. So now it would be possible for a user to feel the blowing wind or the scorching heat of the dessert!

The research in experiments in VR will soon become potential enough to mimic how the body actually feels.

VR Rooms if successful may bring a positive change in the lives of millions of people including the elderly. From reducing loneliness of elderly people to their dream destination, the horizons of VR are expanding rapidly. VR companies however, need to be more conscious about the quality of experiences given to users. As even a single bad quality VR experience can completely turn people off from this technology forever. While implementing the idea of VR rooms for elderly people companies however strictly need to center VR experience around the people.

This blog focused on the VR rooms for elderly people but this does mean that it is not for young people and children. Elderly people need it the most as there are several constraints that prevent them from traveling and reliving their younger days. The VR rooms will be a great experience for both the elderly and young people.

Final thoughts

VR rooms experience may bring a smile on millions of senior people along with making them relive their precious past travel moments.

Augmented Reality (AR) & Virtual Reality (VR) once a dream have now become a reality and are adding value to the healthcare industry as well.

The healthcare industry is one where millions of lives are at a stake every minute. The industry is responsible for building a healthy nation by offering high-quality comprehensive healthcare services. But have you ever thought about the pressure this industry faces?

The demand in the healthcare industry is increasing exponentially with the passing years. As a result, over 20% of a country’s GDP will be spent on healthcare by the countries. The two obvious reasons for the same include an increased prevalence of chronic diseases and a suboptimal usage of healthcare resources.

The quality of healthcare services depends much on the ability of surgeons and doctors involved in the process. Instead of beating the bush around the industry challenges this blog focuses on the solution of AR & VR technologies in the healthcare industry.

AR and VR – the drugless solutions in healthcare

“AR and VR are giving a simulation quality that was possible only with a $ Billion system 20 years ago”

These technologies fit perfectly in the highly complex healthcare industry. These technologies are the computer-generated simulations that either integrate the real world (AR) or are self-contained (VR).

Finding it complex?  Understand this in simple words. AR applications are the ones that allow a user to move around in the real world. VR applications, on the other hand, do not allow the users to see their surroundings.

Still not clear? The AR&VR examples given below will help you.

Remember when people went crazy about catching these animated characters in parks, streets and even in public spaces.  This was the Pokemon Go Fever or the magic of AR. VR can be understood best with the VR games such as Asgard’sWarth where a user walks through the milky and starry sky.

Now when you have a clear idea of these technologies we will discuss how AR and VR Are creating ripples in the Healthcare Industry.

AR & VR for Medical Education

Do you remember the Complex human anatomy and dissections that you studied in your school days? You might have completely forgotten that. A medical student, however, cannot afford to do so. Human anatomy and dissections are the foundation of medical studies.

The Medical Colleges and institutes are utilizing these technologies for giving the best form of education to students.  The education gained using AR & VR will help students in understanding the medical concepts most effectively and interestingly.

Cleveland Clinic is one of the many healthcare institutes that is allowing to visualize the concepts that students study in their books!  Some of the examples of AR and VR simulators used in Medical education are as follows:

Training field VR and AR Simulator
Laparoscopic surgery LaparoscopyVR, LapSim
Robotic surgery SEP, Robot, DV-Trainer
Orthopedics ImmersiveTouch, Phantom haptics interface
Neurosurgery NeuroVR, ImmersiveTouch®, RoboSim,

AR and VR for Training of Surgeons

Ever thought about the woes of surgeons who have to use complex technologies and devices on the patients every day…?  They were not born with a skill of performing the surgeries but they learned it. The traditional form of training methods began to show cracks when it was found that around 30% of the general surgery residents were inefficient in performing surgery independently.

Hence, the situation was alarming! As even a minute mistake in surgery may put a patient’s life on risk.

VR has taken over the game now!  As a result, it is helping surgeons to get a clear glimpse of the surgery process without any struggles. VR training allows surgeons to perform virtual surgery in a simulated environment.

Researchers have conducted studies and found that VR training improves surgical performance by up to 230% in comparison to traditional training methods.

AR and VR for Cancer treatment

Over 10 million Americans are fighting against a battle called ‘cancer’. These people are also living with a hope that there is a possibility of a life beyond cancer. Chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, etc. are however some of the cancer treatments that do help in saving the lives of cancer patients. Unfortunately…not everyone is saved as millions of patients have already lost their lives because of this deadly disease.

“The human spirit is stronger than anything happens to it”

You will be surprised to know that Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) also extend to cancer treatment!  Yes… you heard it right AR & VR help the cancer patients who are undergoing the care.

Below are some essentials that will let you understand how these miraculous technologies are helping cancer patients:

AR& VR is helping the patients to escape to a world that is free from the pain, anxiety, and discomfort of cancer… AR & VR help in improving the functionality, restoring the vision and pain management among the patients. Thus, these technologies form a medium of supportive care for cancer patients.

These technologies offer a calming and pleasant experience to patients during the cancer treatment process… a little sigh of relief for millions of cancer treatment. AR & VR help in shifting the perspective of cancer patients from negative to positive.

HoloLens AR in healthcare

Hololense… not heard about this before? Nothing complex… but an AR set that creates digital content holograms in a real-world environment.  Using holo lense a wearer can experience and manipulate an object as if it is present actually!

Medical students using Hololensecan see the realistic images of body organs and can examine it more deeply. Surgeons on the same hand can use this technology for preparing for a complex surgical procedure.

Alder Hay, one of the leading children hospitals of the UK has already realized the potential of Hololense. The hospital is using HoloLense for viewing the notes and medical information while they are performing the operations without even using their hands!

Great …so 3d inside and outside images of body organs will now help surgeons!

AR for medical diagnosis

The healthcare industry is among the ones that have already geared up and stated utilizing AR and VR in various facets of healthcare.  The giants like Google and Apple are working on the devices and products that will help in improving the diagnosis process. For example an AR driven blood glucose monitors and the smart glasses.

The AR devices will improve both the effectiveness and efficiency of the diagnosis process that forms a foundation for a complete treatment process. The immersive VR experience is also being used in restoring memories and stimulating interactions and emotions of Dementia patients. AR & VR innovations are hence letting the medical professionals visualize the things that they cannot see easily.
